Find out how your conversations with loved ones into comics from Mira Jacob. You can pick up a copy of Mira’s book Good Talk from our friends at Bookshop, where proceeds will help benefit The Believer and independent bookstores.
Watch a video of the livestream below, and follow these steps to create your own family comic.
Here’s what you’ll need to draw a conversation:
1: Paper (the standard size is fine.)
2: Pen/marker to write/draw with.
To create a family interview comic:
Step 1: Interview a loved one, writing down the questions asked and answers given.
Step 2: Pick a part of the interview you’d like to highlight in a comic.
Step 3: On the bottom of the comics page: draw your loved one, and have them draw you. Depict features that stand out, or that you would like to exaggerate.
Step 4: Starting at the top of the page, write a question over the person who asked it.
Step 5: Then write the answer over the person who answered, slightly lower than where you wrote the question.
Step 6: Continue this way until you’ve written out the entire interaction.
Step 7: Now draw speech bubbles around each separate question and answer! It’s important to draw the bubbles after you write out the dialogue so you know how much room you need.
We’d love to see your family comics! Post it to social and tag @believermag and @goodtalkthanks.
