Madeline McMahon: An Illustrated Series

INSIDE THIS ISSUE’S INCIDENTAL ILLUSTRATIONS WITH OUR FEATURED ARTIST

This series is an exploration of unknown paths, a journey of not knowing how to navigate one’s environment. Doors lead to nowhere, or are in some way not traversable. I wanted these paths to feel as uncertain as the paths we take—or are forced to take—in our daily lives. To create this feeling, I experimented with my ongoing interest in architectural shape and form. I started by making a lot of quick sketches on paper until I got a feel for possible compositions and forms. Once I saw the direction an illustration could go, I finalized the sketch digitally.
